Name: Brian O' Connor
Business: Brianoval Productions - Video Production
Tell us about your business?
Brianoval Productions is a video production company based in Kerry. I cater to a wide range of video needs, event videography, social media promotional videos, instructional and informative videos. I also work with different comedians - Bernard Casey and CCCahoots - creating sketch videos for their Facebook pages. These videos have now reached over 2.5 million views combined. I regularly partner up with other companies to assist in their jobs.
What motivated you to start your own business?
The ability to work with various different people and businesses. This allows me to expand my skills by working on a wide range of videos rather than for a company who may only specialize in one type of video. It also allows me to work on films when the opportunity arises which is the ultimate goal.
Tell us what you most enjoy about your job?
Every day is different and the people you get to work with on a regular basis. You are constantly working on something new and getting to try out new techniques. Along with this, you get to work alongside or for different people who can lead you onto paths you might not have been lucky enough to take.
In your business what one great tip could you offer clients?
Focus on quality rather than quantity. What I mean here is that some businesses feel the need to include everything they can think of into one video. Where as a short company story video might suit their market better. Or if they offer a lot of services, a number of shorter videos might be best for their market. This all comes down to pre-planning and thinking out the idea beforehand and not rushing into getting a video made for the sake of it.
What are the plans for your business this year?
Like every year I want to continue to grow and enhance my knowledge and skills with each job I work on to ensure I am better at what I do. My main plans this year is to expand my network of people I work with. I would also like to create 3-4 company story videos in a stylish and cinematic fashion to bring my productions to the next level.
What one piece of advice would you give to others who are thinking of starting their own business?
I would advise others when starting out to think about the long hours and sacrifices that are needed when running your own business. It’s not a normal 9-5 day job and you must be aware that you don’t have set hours. You may set hours for yourself, but with deadlines and number of jobs coming at the same time, these set hours will be out the window. Once you are happy to do this and you love what you are going to be doing, then the long hours and sacrifices will be worth it all.
Tell us about some of the projects you have worked with BBS on?
I have been lucky enough to work with BBS on a number of projects, which have varied in their approach and content. We have created comedy based car loan adverts for the Caherciveen Credit Union, which have been well received locally and nationally. Eimear and Brigeen know the market extremely well and the tone of each video has always been geared towards the market needs. This approach by BBS shows that they know each video is separate and may require a different approach to the previous videos, no matter how successful they were.
I have also filmed a range of videos for two medical client with BBS and again these videos were tailored to their needs and to the market. Eimear and Brigeen have a wealth of experience and knowledge and I’ve learnt a lot having worked closely with them. They truly understand the businesses they work with and their needs, so are able to make decision that benefit those businesses.
We have a number of up coming projects, which I am excited to be working on, as they are all unique to the needs of the video. This makes each video more interesting and fresh, getting the best from everyone.
